What to Look for When You Want a Comfy Bra

Writer: Michelle BeaupreMichelle Beaupre

A comfy bra is like the holy grail of undergarments—once you find it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Size matters when it comes to a bra.  We start your fitting with a measuring tape so we know your numbers (size).

But what makes a bra truly comfortable? For larger sizes, first, look for wide, comfortable cotton straps. These beauties distribute weight evenly and save your shoulders from unnecessary pain. Second, check out the band. A snug but not constricting band is key to proper support (and no, the straps shouldn’t be doing all the heavy lifting). Our larger sizes have four clasps instead of just three! Third, breathable fabric. Because who wants to feel like they’re wearing a sauna? Most of our styles have soft cotton fabric next to the breast tissue for your comfort. Lastly, avoid nasty underwires at all costs. They can pinch, poke and interfere with lymphatic drainage and those wires can break and they hurt. Our bras have a shelf and directional guides to help keep your breast tissue up and in front where it is supposed to be and not under your armpits.

At the Ottawa Bra Clinic, we specialize in orthopaedic and post-surgical bras that combine comfort, style, and function And they may be covered under your 3rd party health plan (check your booklet).
